Back in the good ol’ days when I was assistant music director, I’d be exposed to swarms of new music on a weekly basis. Sitting on the floor of the KTUH office, I’d pop album after album into my laptop, hour after hour, breezing through so many artists that at a certain point, they all began to blend together.
Not so with the new Talus EP “TET.” Clocking in at just under 15 minutes, it’s a breathtaking ride, capturing your attention and staying with you long after it’s done. Talus is the experimental indie-rock project of singer/songwriter and musician Abraham Miller, a Honolulu-based artist who has performed in Beijing, Los Angeles, and Honolulu. However, until recently, I always knew him as “the Pinback guy,” frequent caller to my late-and-great show The Bubble Bunch and requester of prime-cut Pinback tunes.
By heavily looping his tracks, Miller creates an atmospheric soundscape of layered guitars and vocals – as one friend of mine put it, “like alt-J, but cooler.” The EP transitions seamlessly from acoustic and experimental in “Bbton” and “Ajoq,” to electric and tangible in “Real Latch.” It draws inspiration from early icons like Pinback and The Sea and Cake, yet is simultaneously ultra-modern, joining the ranks with indie-kid staples like Bon Iver and Real Estate. Yet at the end of the day, this new EP is uniquely its own, standing on its own two feet, demanding that you slow down and listen.
It’s refreshing to see such a distinctive sound coming from one of the island’s own. With so many musicians leaving Hawaii to seek commercial success abroad, it’s so important to remind and encourage our local artists that they have a place here. One of my great joys as a KTUH DJ is the ability to use my platform to showcase artists such as these, which is why I’ll be playing some never-before-aired Talus tunes tomorrow on KTUH at 8:30am. Tune in if you want to have your ears melted off from sheer pleasure :’)
The EP “TET” is officially released on May 23rd – yay!!
