Songs I Hate(d): Dramarama’s “Anything, Anything”

beach slang

Admittedly, I didn’t always dislike this song. I adored it in high school but Southern California rock radio stations played the hell out of it (and probably still do) and ruined it for me. Philadelphia’s Beach Slang has changed all that.

It’s no secret that I’m in love with this band. James, Ed, JP and Ruben have been wreaking beautiful aural havoc since 2013. Their impassioned take on post-punk/rock n’ roll has had me singing along every time I listen to them to the point where I’m certain that people; in the car next to me, in the house next door, outside the toilet stall, etc must all think I’m nuts.

On October 30th, Beach Slang is releasing their first full length record and I couldn’t be more stoked. Before the full length, they’re putting forth a cassette tape (you read that right) of cover songs entitled Here I Made This For You and have set loose one of those songs online to give us a preview of what’s to come. The song they chose to bleed out first is Dramarama’s love-sick rock ballad, “Anything, Anything”. Beach Slang’s cover is charged and full of electric fuzz in the best way. Lead singer James Alex reaches deep into the abyss and belts out the words with such ardent intensity that it’s easy to forget that he didn’t write them. The original track is brilliant, yes, but the full sound of Beach Slang really makes this song feel like you’re hearing it for the first time without your fingers stuck in your ears.

Do yourself a favor and have a listen right here on Soundcloud.

Here I Made This For You is limited to 500 copies and comes out on October 17th for Cassette Store Day. Hopefully this will see a vinyl/cd or ,at the very least, a digital release soon as well. If you do happen to own a tape deck, call your local independently owned record store and ask them to order a copy for you.
The tape will also include “Like A Daydream” by Ride, “Too Much Kissing” by Senseless Things, “Million Miles Away” by The Plimsouls and “Pickin Flowers For” by Best Kissers In The World. (I am especially pumped for that Plimsouls cover!)
